Katrinah’s East Mountain Grill, Edgewood, NM

Find a place where locals hang out and it’s a safe bet the food is going to be good. This is a local favorite, largely known for its award-winning burrito that put it on the Breakfast Burrito Byway, but the menu is full of other delicious items. A daily soup special is one of them. Odds on favorites are the green chile bacon and potato and Texas chile.

Dels Restaurant & Gifts, Tucumcari, NM

Look for the bull … the one stands sentry over this historic Route 66 restaurant, then step inside and you’ll find a mouthwatering selection of soups … and that’s no bull! There’s a soup and salad bar that boasts a couple of soups each day, so good you’ll stop back in whenever you’re in the area. Best-liked are the cheeseburger, Mexican chicken barley and cream of potato. First opened in 1956, this diner is a delightful step back in time.

Isabel’s, Truth or Consequences, NM

The specialties of the house here are southern Mexican food from the Opopeo Michoacan region. The dishes are fresh, homemade and unique at this tiny mom and pop restaurant. Daily soups change from fish broth with nopales to lentil to chicken and beef broth to a beef tomato stew. A friendly place that serves a quick and simple meal.

Blue Window Bistro, Los Alamos, NM

On any given day, you might get clam chowder, mulligatawny, beer and cheese, chicken tortilla or French onion soup at this casual eatery, that actually has blue trimmed windows. Try a cup as a side, or order a bowl and make a meal of it. For more than 30 years, this restaurant has fed the local community with fresh, local and quality food. Indulgence Bakery & Cafe, Las Cruces, NM

A luxurious treat, that is indeed what a meal at this cafe is. Everything is prepared from scratch by the mom and daughter duo who are behind the smells and tastes at this eclectic restaurant. Soups are made daily, as are all of the breads and dessert. Even sandwich meats are roasted in house. Choose from a fresh buttermilk biscuit or hunk of focaccia to dip in your soup.

Long Dragon, Farmington, NM

Don’t be fooled by this restaurant’s unexciting exterior. Once inside, you’ll find food that is tantalizing and plentiful, made with fresh, quality ingredients. The soups, sizzling chicken rice, egg drop, won ton, hot and sour or vegetable are full-bodied, flavorful and a meal in themselves. Carry-out or dine-in.

Tune-Up Cafe, Santa Fe, NM

Inside and out, this tiny restaurant is a good assault on the senses. It’s colorful. The ambiance is funky, fun, welcoming and inviting and the food is packed with zesty, tangy and spicy flavor. The soups are full of creative flavors. Soups of the day include ginger kombucha, Indian corn, coconut curry and carrot, green chile, poblano, avocado and squash. A small eatery with food that packs a wallop.

This pizza parlor has so much more than just pizza.
